NEW: How to Update Your Student Driver Role
FMCSA has updated the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse to allow student drivers to update their user role in the Clearinghouse.
When are you required to update your student driver role?
When you are no longer considered a student driver; that is, when you are no longer enrolled in a CDL school but will be performing safety-sensitive functions.
How do you update your Clearinghouse user role?
Once you have completed your CDL training program, log in to your Student Driver Dashboard and click Update Role. Download the new Update Your Student Driver Role job aid for more details.
Which new role should student drivers that have completed their CDL training program select?
- Those who are no longer enrolled in a CDL training program but will be performing safety-sensitive functions should select the Driver role.
- Those who are no longer enrolled in a CDL training program but will be performing safety-sensitive functions and drive a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) for a company that they own should select the Owner-Operator role.
An owner-operator is a self-employed driver who operates a commercial motor vehicle CMV for his or her own business, typically a single-driver operation. To learn more about owner-operator Clearinghouse requirements, visit the Owner-Operator Resources tab of the Clearinghouse Learning Center.
